Construction Superintendent - Transportation

We are looking for an experienced Construction Superintendent to join our TxDOT Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) team. This position plays a vital leadership role in the daily oversight of transportation construction projects, ensuring that all work meets TxDOT specifications, safety standards, and project schedules. The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of TxDOT construction practices, field coordination, and inspection procedures, along with the ability to effectively lead field personnel and foster strong collaboration between the contractor, client, and CEI team.
Responsibilities:
- Provide daily on-site supervision and oversight of TxDOT construction activities to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Coordinate field operations, inspections, and testing with TxDOT personnel, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Monitor construction progress, safety, quality, and environmental compliance, identifying and resolving issues as they arise.
- Review and document field activities, quantities, and materials in accordance with TxDOT CEI documentation procedures.
- Ensure all inspection reports, pay item quantities, and construction records are accurate and up to date.
- Communicate effectively with the Project Manager, Record Keeper, and other CEI team members to maintain project alignment and documentation integrity.
- Participate in project meetings, progress reviews, and coordination sessions with TxDOT and contractors.
- Support the enforcement of safety programs and ensure adherence to all TxDOT and OSHA requirements.
- Review and assist with change orders, time impact analyses, and project closeout documentation as needed.
- Mentor and provide guidance to field inspectors and junior staff.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, or a related field required. Relevant experience may be substituted for the educational requirements.
- 8+ years of construction field experience, with at least 4 years in a supervisory role on TxDOT or similar transportation infrastructure projects.
- Comprehensive knowledge of TxDOT specifications, standards, and construction practices.
- Familiarity with SiteManager, LCPTracker, and TxDOT documentation systems preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.
- Proven commitment to safety, quality, and client satisfaction. Must complete OSHA 10-hour training (training paid by WRA)
- Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and personal vehicle for travel to and from assigned construction sites
- Basic computer skills (Word & Excel) are desirable as well as experience with using computer laptops or field tablets for preparing electronic DWRs and photographic documentation
- Ability to work primarily in the field with travel as required within assigned project areas.
- This position may require periodic in-state overnight travel
Physical Requirements (Essential Functions):
This position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks in the field as part of the essential job functions. Duties may include:
- Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfaces
- Moving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles
- Performing physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing
- Remaining in a stationary position—either standing or sitting—for extended periods of time
- Repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs distances up to 25 yards.
- Driving to and from project sites which may involve distances of up to or exceeding 200 miles round trip.
- Must be able to function safely in an environment with potential risks, including, but not limited to those described in this document.
- Must be willing to work nights and overtime, when required by the project assignment
The work environment may include exposure to a range of environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures, precipitation, and other outdoor elements. Work may also be performed in noisy conditions or confined/enclosed spaces.
