Instrument & Controls Engineer - Entry-Level

Whitman, Requardt, & Associates (WRA) is currently seeking an entry-level Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Engineer to join our York, PA office. You’ll work closely with senior engineers to support the planning, design, programming, and construction of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and industrial control systems for water and wastewater facilities. This position offers an introduction to the world of industrial automation and process control, with opportunities to learn system design, PLC/HMI programming, network communications, and cybersecurity best practices within water/wastewater critical infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Work in a collaborative environment to assist senior engineers in the design of I&C systems.
- Prepare control system and SCADA design drawings:
- Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
- Control panel layouts
- Schematic wiring diagrams
- I/O point wiring diagrams
- Network architecture diagrams.
- Develop written process control and functional narratives.
- Prepare specifications for control and SCADA system components and equipment.
- Prepare engineering construction cost estimates.
- Coordinate with electrical and mechanical engineers to support the design of control and SCADA systems.
- Inspect, test and commission control and communications systems in industrial environments.
- Coordinate and review construction submittals and requests for information with control system integrators.
- Design and program PLC based control systems using Allen-Bradly, Modicon, and other PLC based control systems.
- Understand Program Operator Interface (OIT) and HMI graphical programming applications.
- Perform field inspections, testing procedures and commissioning control systems.
- Demonstrate Cyber-Security practices.
- The I&C Engineer will need to be able to travel occasionally (10%) to local area construction sites. Work on site include perform field investigations and witness factory and site acceptance testing.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or related Engineering discipline (or equivalent technical degree) from an ABET accredited program.
- 0-4 years of relevant experience.
- Strong desire to learn and grow in the areas of industrial automation, instrumentation, controls, and communications.
- Self-motivated and curious with a collaborative mindset.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.
- Ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, Word, Excel, and Teams
- Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD and Revit.
- Willingness to pursue EIT/FE certification.
- U.S. citizenship required.
